FIREHOUSE 12 TO PRESENT LARRY OCHS’S KIHNOUA
On Friday, March 23rd, Firehouse 12 is pleased to welcome back saxophonist/composer Larry Ochs and his new group Kihnoua featuring vocalist Dohee Lee, bassist Trevor Dunn, and percussionist Scott Amendola. The influence of Korean musical traditions, including p’ansori folk singing and sinawi improvisation give this group its distinctive character.
Lyn Horton, in her review of Kihnoua’s 2010 release Unauthorized Caprices (NotTwo), writes “the intensity of this music never retreats. . .[t]hese musicians break their own rules to follow musical lines that have no history” (JazzTimes). Seth Watter writes “Ochs forgoes virtuosity for atmosphere and texture, his simple phrases undulating around Lee’s elegiac voicings” (All About Jazz).
Ochs is best know for his work as a founding member of the Rova Saxophone Quartet. Since 1977, Rova has performed in over thirty European tours and numerous concerts throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as recording over 30 CDs as a quartet and/or in collaboration with other artists. Ochs’s other groups include the Larry Ochs Sax & Drumming Core and Jones Jones featuring bassist Mark Dresser and percussionist Vladimir Tarasov.
